Buffy, Buffy, Buffy!

Hard to believe, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been off the air since, what--2003? Yeesh. I'm not a total fanatic, but I do still love that show (and Angel, which was always somewhat underrated). Anyway, the reason I'm so excited is that Joss Whedon himself (master of the Buffyverse), has agreed to write the Season 8 that never appeared (after the cast and crew decided to go out on a high note--technically, the show wasn't cancelled as such) as a comic book series. Various artists will illustrate. And thanks to the limitless freedom (budget-wise, anyway) of the graphic format, Whedon has said he feels free to take the storyline in directions that he couldn't afford when the show was on the air.

I've ordered two copies each of the first four issues (you can't preorder more than that yet) from TFAW.com (that's Things from Another World, mail-order comics central). I'll have one copy to read, one to keep. (It only costs 25 cents apiece to bag them in plastic, so what the hell?) I just got my shipping notice for Issue #1, and I CANNOT WAIT!

This series of comics looks set to run and run, and with the possibility of a Joss Whedon penned series of "Angel" in comic format looming the future of the Buffy 'verse is looking a little brighter!
Seeing as the first run of the new Buffy comic sold out in 48 hours I would be interested to know if you receive the second run version or if the comic store managed to bag you one of the first run issues.
Whichever, the comic is very Shiny!

I ordered it several weeks ago, but right now I'm in the dark as to which version I get--but I'm sure I'll be happy with first or second run.

And wouldn't an Angel series be great? Talk about a show that still had stories to tell!

Joss Whedon has been writing a few titles for Marvel for the last couple years and I've heard nothing but great things about them.

I've got my copy of #1, but I haven't read it yet.

Also -- there are LOTS of Angel comics out there. (Mini-series and one-shots) I don't think any of them are written by Mr. Whedon himself, but some of them have to be good.

Authors who are working in comics now range from Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) and Stephen King (plotting for the new Dark Tower series) to Deepak Chopra, whose line of Indian-mythology comics is a joint venture with Richard Branson. Chopra has actually written a couple of the comics himself. His son (named "Gotham" -- wonder where that came from? :) ) is also in on the project.

(By the way, Karrie of "One Weird Mother" is my wife. That's how I found your blog.)

Wow--good info. I must admit, I have only a passing knowledge of today's comics, but as a kid, I used to scarf up my brother's stash like a vacuum cleaner. (I even loved those goofy hot rod comics where the teen boy had a ridiculous crew cut and made fun of hippies! Thanks for the update!)

There's so much emphasis on manga these days (it seems) that it's nice to see the homegrown market thriving with so many good writers dipping their toes in. And I'm not even talking about graphic novels, of course, which are a whole other subject, worthy of their own discussion.

BTW, your wife ROCKS!

Ooh, thanks for this info! I haven't been a comic book fan to date, but this could well convert me. [jumping up and down with excitement and rubbing hands in glee]
