Or Maybe Big Floppy Shoes?

Driving down 128 South this weekend, I happened to see a three-truck convoy from the Aleppo Shrine Circus, which is run as one of the fundraising arms of the Shriners.

The lead 18-wheeler, with its imposing black trailer, bore the markings "Clown Unit." Which begs the question: What do you think a big rig filled with clown paraphernalia is actually filled with? I'm guessing several dozen of those tiny little cars.

Reminds me of the day I was driving down I-91 from N.H. and passed a clown-car carrier (Shriners again) with the phrase "Ask Me About Becoming a Shirner!" (or something to that effect) written across it.

Makes me wonder how many middle-aged men see that and think "hey! I've always *dreamed* of riding in a little car! I think I'll ask!"

or do they get 'em when they're kids? And what's a Shriner anyway??

Ah, what is a Shriner, indeed?

All I know is they run those wonderful hospitals to care for burned children. And they have a LOT of members who seem to be clowns. Literally, clowns. Not jerks, but people who wear red noses and funny wigs. I guess they're to entertain the kids in the hospital?

I'm very tempted to ask a Shriner if there's a circus or performance legacy to being a Shriner. I wonder if they are as secretive as the freemasons. Next time I'm at the Home Show at the Big E, I'll have to ask.

Neither the Shriners nor the Freemasons are a secret organization, both are very similar to the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and the Order of the Moose. All of these organizations are fraternal organizations which happen to have a private initiation ritual and also its members are dedicated to helping other people. In case you didn't know the Shriner's are a branch of Freemasonry and membership in Freemasonry is required before a person is eligible to become a Shriner. In order to become a Freemason, all you have to do is call your local lodge and ask. Hope this helps.
