Good Line from a Mediocre Movie
I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yesterday and wasn't thrilled. Didn't hate it--just didn't see the need to remake the Gene Wilder version, which is a childhood favorite of mine. And let's face it, Johnny Depp channeling Anna Wintour or whatever he was doing was kind of creepy. (And I happen to love Johnny Depp. Most of the time.)
There was a line that I loved, though (and this may be from the book; I haven't read it since third grade). As the group clutching their golden tickets enters the big candy meadow with the chocolate river, Willy Wonka (AKA Depp) tells everyone:
"Everything here is eatable. The trees, the flowers, the grass. Even I'm eatable, but that is called cannibalism and is frowned upon in most societies."I'm not sure why he pronounces the word "eatable" instead of "edible," but no matter. But I liked the idea of cannibalism being frowned on merely in "most" societies.

But remember..."SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE...SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE"!

Yes, but Soylent Green is also frowned upon in certain societies.
Definitely no mention of swudge in the new movie. I demand a recount. I mean a remake. I mean ... oh, heck, I should just reread the book!
Out here in Western Mass, we've been speculating that Depp's channelling Carol Channing--the hair, the googly eyes, smile that won't quit. Ever. Kind of scary, actually.
I never liked Wilder's interpretation of Wonka...too bland. The book remains best.
Books are usually the best, it's true! Except for Jaws. That book was horrible--you couldn't help but wish the sharks would take out every character, preferably in alphabetical order. The movie far surpassed it.
Except for the constant smiling, I found Depp's Wonka also vaguely reminiscent of Edna Mode in The Incredibles. But much creepier and without the invaluable advice about wearing capes.
